Drywood Termite Swarms

Drywood termites are unique creatures that typically take flight between the late spring and fall months once the weather begins to warm.

Their swarms can be identified by their flying adults, colloquially known as “swarmers.” These swarmers are approximately 1/2 inch in length and boast a polished, dark brown body. Most notably, they are equipped with two pairs of wings that are equal in size and carry a slightly smoky gray color. The swarmers are attracted to light, and it's common to spot them near windows and doors.

Drywood termite swarmers leave behind distinctive six-sided fecal pellets known as “frass,” a telltale sign of their presence.

Subterranean Termite Swarms

Subterranean termite swarms are a common sight in the spring, particularly on warm days after rainfall.

The swarmers are black or dark brown, with a long, rectangular body that is usually around 1/4 to 1/2 inch in length. Unlike their drywood counterparts, these termites have two pairs of wings that are unequal in size. The more extended set is almost twice the length of their body, while the shorter pair is just about the length of the body.
