Having your house fumigated can be a long and tedious process. It’s much easier to keep pests out of your house in the first place, so follow these five steps and enjoy a pest-free home.
Reduce Entry Points
One of the most important things to do to keep pests out of your house is to seal as many entry points as possible. This means replacing weather-stripping, caulking cracks and holes around gas and water lines, and making sure your doors are airtight when shut.
Eliminate Moisture
Also, the less moisture you have in your house, the better. Pests like ants, rats and cockroaches are so small they can find enough hydration to survive on from just the water in the air, so do everything you can to reduce moisture, such as insulating water pipes and investing in a dehumidifier.
Clean Up Food Particles
If pests do get into your house, you don’t need to make it easier for them to survive. They can only live off of the food we leave for them, so make sure you vacuum your carpets periodically, wipe all crumbs off your counter with a soapy sponge and store your dry goods properly so that pests can’t get to them.
Keep Your Yard Clean
Since pest control starts around the home, it’s critical that you keep your back and front yards as inhospitable to pests as you can. You can do this by keeping your grass low so that pests won’t be able to hide in your lawn and making sure you don’t over water, creating puddles that pests can drink from.
Inspect Items Before Bringing Them Indoors
Finally, make sure that everything and everyone that comes into your house is pest-free. If you’ve just returned from a trip, check your luggage thoroughly for bed bugs, if you have dogs, don’t let them into the house before searching them for fleas and ticks, and if you have kids who like to play outside, make sure their clothes go right into the washing machine when they come in. Many pests travel exclusively on clothes, bags and animals, so do yourself a favor and verify that you’re not bringing them into your house.
Once pests have made themselves at home, they can be tough to get rid of. Fortunately, by following just a few simple pest control tips, you probably won’t ever have that problem. For more information, or to receive quality pest control services, give PestBear a call today.
